Your child should start seeing the dentist no later than their first birthday. Not only will this help protect their smile from cavities, but it also ensures that they start learning about the importance of excellent oral care from a young age. Are you looking for a dental team that you can trust with your little one’s oral development? Reach out to Sweet Smiles Dental Design today to schedule an appointment with our Castle Rock children's dentist, Dr. Fitzgerald.

Dental Sealants
When your child is first learning how to brush their teeth, they may have trouble cleaning their molars properly. We may suggest having dental sealants applied to the molars in order to give them additional protection against decay until they have gotten the hang of their oral hygiene routine. Sealants can protect the pits and grooves of the chewing surfaces of the molars from food debris and bacteria, and they can last for years at a time.
Silver Diamine Fluoride
If your child already has a cavity, we can use silver diamine fluoride to treat it while also protecting the tooth in question from further decay. The silver fights harmful bacteria while the fluoride aids with the process of re-mineralizing the teeth. Applying silver diamine fluoride is a simple, non-invasive process; once the decayed parts of the tooth are removed, the solution can be placed on the area with the help of a small brush.
Non-Nutritive Oral Habits
Does your child suck their thumb? This type of non-nutritive habit is fine while they are still young, but if they continue to do it after they reach a certain age, it could have dire consequences for their oral development. If you are concerned about your child’s thumb-sucking, let us know; we can give you advice for breaking the habit before it can lead to alignment issues that might require orthodontic work in the future.
Pulp Therapy
When your child is suffering from tooth pain, we may find that it’s the result of an infection of the pulp (the innermost layer of the tooth that contains soft tissues and nerves). To stop the pain and salvage the tooth, we may need to perform pulp therapy. This involves creating an opening in the tooth in question and removing the infected part of the pulp. Afterward, a crown can be placed in order to keep the treated tooth safe.
